Playing Tight Early

Texas Hold ‘Em poker online tournaments are among the most popular poker events, and they’re my favorite form of poker for a myriad of reasons. I like how everyone starts out with the same stack, how the game constantly changes, and how the game goes on until there’s only one player left holding all the casino chips. When playing in a online poker tournament, timing is a huge key to success. Unlike cash games, where a player can stay indefinitely (or until his cash runs out), tournaments have a blind system that increases rapidly, drawing an eventual end to the game. In light of the raising blinds, a factor in tournament success is to adjust your play as the game progresses. I find that it pays off to play tighter poker in the early stages of the tournament, and then looser my game gradually as the blinds increase. Tight play early on prevents you from losing chips for small pots, making it easier to survive into the later rounds, when the competitive field is smaller, the pots are bigger, and you’re closer to the money. Playing tightly early on will also help you to establish a tight image, which will be helpful later on when you start bluffing.
