We all tackle plotting differently. How you plot will be individual to you, as it is with every writer.

Below is an outline of what can go into a plot. How much you choose to develop each point is entirely up to you.

So some basic questions to ask are…

1.Briefly what your story is about

2.The theme?

3.Main Characters

a.For main characters it’s best to write a full biography of them.

4.Secondary Characters

a.Who are they?

b.What will their role be?

c.What is their relationship with main character?

5.Beginning of the story

a.Viewpoint – who will be telling the story?

b.Setting – where will the story take place?

c.How will you introduce main character?

d.How will you introduce other characters?

e.How will the story begin?

f.What will happen in the beginning?

g.What is the conflict?

h.What is the character’s goal?

i.How will the conflict prevent the character from reaching his goal?

j.What’s motivating the character?

6.Middle of the story

a.What will happen in the beginning section, of the middle of your story?

b.How will this be tied to the beginning of your story?

c.What will happen in the middle section, of the middle of your story?

d.What will happen in the end section, of the middle of your story?

Okay, so what do you need to succeed in your writing career?

To keep it simple, I would say just five things – the first four are obvious enough but the last one may shock (and comfort) you.

Let’s go through them in order:

Technical ability

This doesn’t mean you have to be Saul Bellow or Toni Morrison before you start but it does mean that there is a certain level of competence expected of you before you begin showing your work to the outside world.

But don’t beat yourself up about it. It’s an ongoing process; writers learn all the time. It’s an attitude thing. As long as you’re open to the idea that you will need to improve your understanding of the mechanics of writing, then you’ll be well placed to absorb new ideas, the teachings of others and learn through reading and study.

Persistence

The past tells us that writers rarely have an easy path to immortality. We all must suffer rejection a thousand times it seems before we are ready for the public to recognize our efforts.

You may despair sometimes at the unfairness. You may be frustrated at every turn by a seemingly uncaring world but – remember this – all writers have been down this well traveled road and the best and most persistent arrive at their destination better equipped to endure – simply because it wasn’t too easy.

Make ‘never give up’ your personal motto and you will succeed – it’s the way of the World.

A Little Bit of Talent

Anyone familiar with the content of my ebooks and courses will know my attitudes on talent.

Simply put, it’s not some nebulous item that you can pluck out of the air and consume. Neither is it some innate ability that only the chosen few can possess.

Rather it is the courage to ‘tell it like it is’ and the willingness to hold nothing of yourself back from your writing. You will find that the more open and honest you are (however much it hurts) the more people will describe you as talented and original.

This is because it’s your vision of the world that makes you unique – and unique is rare and therefore special.

Make it your goal to always tell the truth in your writing – let that be your talent.

A Little Bit of Luck

On the radio the other day I listened to a Vocational Expert talking about careers. He’d studied 1000 people and was surprised at how many lives had been defined by seemingly chance events. He talked about all the things we’re familiar with: the opportune meeting, that phone call, the time we were just following a whim, the totally unexpected break.

His message was clear. All too few of us take luck into account when we plan our careers.

I believe, to a certain extent, we make our own luck. We may plan, we may write, we may persist but we must also learn to let go and follow our intuition. Luck – being in the right place at the right time – has a way of happening whether we plan for it or not. I think the trick is to believe that luck will help you – and, for reasons great and mysterious, it will!

So What’s the Secret Ingredient, Rob?

Now, don’t groan, or mock, or do that skyward look on me as I tell you the secret ingredient is love.

Let me explain.

You cannot succeed in a vacuum. Success is relative and – in our world – requires the assistance and support of those around us to happen. Therefore, love is the crucial factor that facilitates our success.

First, you must love your writing. Only then will you give it the attention it deserves and make it the best that it can be.

You must love writing, and the writings of others, for showing you the way and for providing the medium of communication that means so much to you.

You must love those around you for the support they can give you. If you show those around you hate or anger or bitterness, they will not want you to succeed and will unconsciously (or sometimes deliberately) sabotage your success. Not good.

You must love the people you deal with in your professional life – the agents, the publishers and fellow writers. Treat them with suspicion and resentment and they will not want to work with you and help you. Love and trust your peers and your contacts and you’ll be surprised how much more they are willing to assist and promote you.

But most of all, you must love yourself – the greatest love of all, as they say. Treat yourself kindly, nurture your talent and support your writing habits.

Start here and now, loving what you do and who you are and practice loving everyone and everything around you…you’ll be amazed at the difference it makes.

Use love as your secret weapon…and success may be just a whisper away.

If you have an entertainment website then you’re always looking for fresh, new, fun and interesting material to keep your readers coming back for more. Movie reviews are a great way to do that. People always want to know what someone else thinks about the movie they want to see and they will scour the web to look for these opinions. Now you could syndicate another site’s reviews, but why do that? You want your readers to be loyal to you and your site and honestly, they want to hear what you have to say and what you think. If you’re thinking you haven’t the foggiest idea on how to write fun, compelling movie reviews, then think again. I’m going to tell you all you need to know.

1.Actively Watch the Movie – Yes, I recognize that movie watching is a passive activity. Watching a movie isn’t something you do, it is something that happens to you. However, if you want to write good reviews you have to learn to look at movies with a critical eye. This means you need to pay attention to everything and I mean Everything. Notice how the actors are placed in each shot, the setting, the camera angles, even the music. All of these elements play a role in the story that is trying to be told and are important to talk about if you want to write the compelling sort of reviews that your readers will stop by your site each week to read. .

2.Take Copious Notes – No, I don’t expect you to sit in a theatre with pen and pad or laptop in hand. But I do expect you to take solid mental notes. Information such as the actor’s names or who the director was is easy to come across, but information like camera shots, or plot devices is not, so you need to train yourself not only to watch for that type of information but also to remember it.

3.Summarize. Don’t Spoil. – This is important. Nothing is worse then reading a review that tells the whole movie from beginning to end and leaves nothing for you to see. People want your opinion, not for you to spoil the movie. A basic summation of the plot is all that is necessary. From there you can talk about whether or not the plot worked well or was the plot even a plot at all. Let the details of the film be revealed when your readers see the film, not when they read your review.

4.Critical Analysis is Key – The difference between a review anyone can write and a review people will clamor to read is in how well you analyze the film. Think about those papers you had to write for lit class in college. The professor didn’t want you to just tell him what the book was about but wanted you to break down the themes in the book and how they related to the plot, the characters, etc. Well the same is true for a movie review. No one wants a summary of events or the plot. A good review will examine the themes or ideas the movie raises and talk about how well or not so well the movie executed those themes and ideas.

5.Point Out the Pros and the Cons – No movie is perfect and rarely is any movie all bad, so take the time to talk about what the movies does well and what it does not so well.

6.Be Original – For some folk it is two thumbs up, for others it is rotten tomatoes. Whatever you decide you want your rating system to be, be original. Try to find a hook that works for you. Just don’t do something that closely resembles someone else or you’ll just seem like a bad copy of the original.

Follow these steps and you’ll be writing the best reviews the web has to offer and your readers will constantly come back for more week in and week out. Happy writing.

Colossians 4:17 has always been a curious verse to me. Paul has just finished his letter to the church in Colosse. Among the greetings that are customary at the end of his letters, he throws in what almost appears to be an afterthought: “Tell Archippus: ‘See to it that you complete the work you have received in the Lord.’”

The Bible doesn’t tell us much about Archippus. The only other time he is mentioned is in the book of Philemon where Paul refers to him as a fellow solider. I cannot help but wonder who he was and what kind of work he received from the Lord. And why did Paul feel compelled to tell him to be sure to finish it?

Bear with me for a moment while I speculate. If Archippus had a special gifting from God, there were probably those around him who did not understand that gifting or were jealous of his ministry. Maybe Paul felt it was important to remind him to hang in there even if his faithfulness did not make him the most popular guy around.

Another possibility is that Paul knew Archippus had a special gift but was not using it to the fullest because of insecurities or self-doubt. By writing this message in a letter to the whole church, Paul may have wanted to bolster Archippus’ confidence by publicly affirming his belief that Archippus was capable of living up to his calling.

Or maybe neither of these was true. Maybe Archippus was already doing very well in his ministry and Paul just wanted to encourage him to press on to greater heights. As an evangelist with an active ministry himself, Paul probably knew how easy it was to lose sight of the big picture.

We’ll never know Paul’s true motives or how Archippus reacted, but this brings me to a question: What is the work the Lord has given you to do, and do you need a reminder to see it through to completion? Think about it for a minute. Do you ever feel discouraged or doubtful? Do you ever get distracted from what you should be doing by all those other things you could be doing?

Some are called to public ministries while others minister daily in more private, less obvious ways. Maybe your work is to be a good provider for your one-income family. Maybe your ministry is to be a Christian example in your workplace or neighborhood. Or maybe as a single parent, your job is to raise your children as best you can.

Whatever your situation, Paul has a message for you today. Don’t give up. Don’t wander into self-doubt. Don’t get distracted. This spontaneous message to Archippus is just as applicable today as it was almost 2000 years ago. Whatever you are called to do, be sure that you complete the work you have received in the Lord.
