Differences Between poker Chips

If you are thinking about hosting a poker tournament at your home, you’re probably putting together a list of things to buy: pretzels, beer, sandwiches, and a nice set of poker chips. Here’s the conundrum: which poker chips are suitable for me? In general, there are two broad categories of poker chips: plastic and clay.

First, let’s discuss plastic poker chips. They are fairly common and can be purchased anywhere from your local supermarket to online retail stores. Their main attractive feature is their low price, but you get what you pay for. Plastic poker chips have a bit of a cheap feel and lightness to them so if you do not particularly care about how poker chips feel or do not play poker enough to justify the higher costs then definitely go with plastic poker chips.

However, if you do care about such things as quality and resale value of poker chips, then you’re better off purchasing a set of clay poker chips. Clay chips are widely regarded as being highly valuable and more professional than plastic poker chips. It is for this exact reason that casinos only use real clay poker chips. Within the clay poker chips category, there are true clay poker chips and clay composite poker chips. True clay poker chips have a heavier weight than plastic chips and a more grip-like feel to them making it easier to stack chips higher and to perform a variety of chip tricks. Clay composite chips are usually manufactured using a ratio of clay and plastic. To achieve a heavier weight, clay composite chips have a metal disc inside making them less valuable than clay poker chips. Ultimately, your choice of poker chips hinges on what you value more: value or quality.
